Reading Log: these are stories you read to your child. These can include your baggie books, library books, ect...
It is my goal to keep the homework that needs to be completed as manageable and organized as possible for you. I feel it is important to establish a regular homework routine with your child. It is very important to review all the concepts and skills that we will be working on at school. We are a team and together we will make this year a success for your child! The homework will come home in a packet at the start of each week and will include nightly assignments (M-Th). Please return your packet on Friday. These are some of the assignment that will be coming home... MATH Math homework is important extension of our math activities that we complete in class. It is important to assist your child when completing the homework activities. I think you will find them quick to complete, meaningful and fun! LETTER WORK When we begin review the letters and sounds, I will be sending home a quick practice sheet for your child to complete at home. It will review the proper way to print the letter and include soem practice with the sound that letter makes. SIGHT WORDS Sight words (or High Frequency Words) are words that we see and use ofter when reading and writing. You child will learn over 50 sight words this year, these set of words are the foundation of our language. Good readers should be able to recognize and read them instantly. Knowledge of sight words is necessary for fluent reading. Many of these words do not sound like their spellings; therefore sounding them out would be unproductive. Although many sight words carry little meaning, they affect the flow and coherence of text. Developing a large sight word vocabulary helps a student become a better reading by increasing reading fluency, speed and accuracy. BOOK BAGS Book bags will be sent home on Monday and returned the following Monday. Students will pick out the bag of books they would like to read. I can not express how important it is to read to your child each and every day! I CAN READ TO YOU Each week I will be working with small guided reading groups. These books will come home in your child's P.U.E.O folder. I feel it is very important for your child to be reading as much as possible and hopefully, these books will help provide support with that at home. It is very important that you have your child read the book to you & provide as much support as he/she needs. Here are a few suggestions: >Be sure your child is "tracking" or pointing to the words as he/she reads >Discuss the punctuation marks >Discuss the sight words in the books >Discuss the book at the conclusion. Was your child able to comprehend what he/she read? What happened at the beginning, middle and end? Who are the characters? What was the setting? >When your child arrives to a words he/she doesn't know, help him/her decode it. In class we "sing" out the sounds then snap the word back together. HANDWRITING What can I say, the more practice, the better! There will be practice pages coming home for your child to complete. If you feel your child needs some more practice, you can visit the "Handwriting" link below and print pages for each of the letters.
